From the iconic yellow taxis of New York City to the classic black hackney carriages of London, sometimes travelling by taxi is the easiest way to travel in an English-speaking country. So on today’s episode of Survival English, let’s explore some “taxi talk” to help you enjoy a smooth ride.

Asking someone to call a taxi

In the US, many hotels offer a taxi-calling service. So, don’t feel shy to ask the receptionist for a favor. You can simply ask:

Can you please call a taxi for me? I need to get to the airport tomorrow afternoon.

Calling a taxi yourself

It’s also wise to keep the number of a local taxi company, because you never know when it might come in handy. When the dispatch operator answers, you might hear something like, “City Taxi. How can I help you?” Be ready to provide your location and your destination. For example:

Can I get a taxi to the airport? I’m at the Hilton Hotel near Times Square.

Or,

Can I schedule a taxi pick up for 6 o’clock tomorrow morning?

Of course, don’t forget to confirm the details of your trip with the operator. You can ask questions like:

What will it cost me to go from my hotel to the airport?

Or,

How long is the wait for a taxi right now?

Using taxi apps

However, if you are in a smaller city, you might not see any taxicabs on the streets. That’s because usually only larger cities have traditional cabs. But don’t be sad your DIDI app doesn’t work overseas. UBER is a popular taxi app in many Western countries, including the US and the UK. Like DIDI, it connects passengers directly with local drivers using GPS technology.

Flagging down a taxi

If all else fails, then it’s time to go outside and hunt for a taxi yourself. Sometimes, getting a taxi is just as easy as waving your hands as drives by. This is called “flagging” or “hailing down” a taxi. However, don’t put your thumb up. It means you want to hitch a ride to another city for free.

Chatting with the driver

Finally, as a passenger, don’t be afraid to chat with the driver. Most drivers are friendly and love to talk. When making requests, always be polite. Say things like “excuse me,” “please” and “thank you.” Now let’s take a look at some questions you might need to ask the driver.

1. Would you mind making a quick stop? This question is useful if you need to pick someone or something up along the way. The driver will likely keep the meter running when you are not in the car.

2. How much do I owe you? Do you prefer cash or credit card? When you arrive at your destination, you can usually pay with cash. Not every driver can accept credit cards. So prepare enough money before your taxi ride. Also, don’t forget to tip the driver. In the USA, a 10-15 percent tip is common. When you leave the cab, you can say, “Keep the change.”

3. May I have a receipt please? It’s a good habit to always ask for the receipt, just in case you leave something in the cab.

4. Thanks for the ride, Take care or Take it easy. Finally, when getting out of the taxi, remember to mind your manners. If you enjoyed the trip, then tell the driver you appreciate his or her service. Saying “thanks” is a polite custom in the West.
