Welcome to Classic Reading. I' m your host, Jordon. Let’s begin with a question. What' s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about spring? Pink peach blossoms on the trees? Delicious spring rolls on the dinner table? Or how about famous springtime literature? In this episode, I' d like to talk about a poem you have probably heard before, “春晓,” or A Spring Morning, a poem by the Tang dynasty poet Meng Haoran.

欢迎来到《致经典》，我是主持人Jordon。我想先问大家一个问题，说到春天，大家第一反应想到的是什么？是树上粉嫩的桃花？餐桌上美味的春卷？还是会想到一些跟春天有关的著名文学作品？在本期节目中，我想跟大家一起欣赏一首家喻户晓的诗——《春晓》，作者唐代诗人孟浩然。

This poem is a classic piece of "shanshui poetry," or "landscape poetry," which focuses on describing the beauty of the "mountains, rivers, gardens and farmlands" of China. 

这首诗是一首典型的“山水田园诗”，这种诗的风格着重描绘中国的山河田园之美。

The special thing about a shanshui poem is that every sentence focuses on the beauty of nature, which usually is a metaphor for human emotions and life experience. The poet turns to nature for answers to life’s questions.

山水田园诗的独特之处在于，每句诗都在着重描绘自然之美，其通常也是对情感和阅历的一些隐喻。诗人想向大自然寻解生命之谜。

Now let’s take a look at an English translation of “春晓.” 

现在我们来看一下《春晓》这首诗的英译版本。

A Spring Morning

Translated by Xu Yuanchong

This spring morning in bed I’m lying,

Not to awake till the birds are crying.

After one night of wind and showers,

How many are the fallen flowers!

In this short poem, the poet Meng Haoran describes an interesting scene. Lying on his bed, he awakes to the sound of birdsong on a spring morning. Looking outside, he sees many wet, colorful flowers on the ground. The wind and rain he heard during the night had blown the flowers down.

在这首诗中，诗人孟浩然描绘了一片妙趣横生的景象。在一个春天的早晨，诗人躺在床上，从婉转的鸟鸣声中醒来。放眼望向窗外的地上，满是湿漉漉的花儿，原来是前一天夜里的风和雨将其吹落一地。

The fallen flowers are both a beautiful and sad image that represents change and the passage of time. In that moment, perhaps the poet realized how the storms of his own life had changed him forever. Maybe he was reminded of days gone by, the people he used to know and his own lost dreams. So he wrote this poem.

落花是美丽而又伤感的场景，象征着时光的流逝。在当时的环境下，诗人也许意识到，他生命中的重大变化将改变其一生。或许触景生情，想到了以往的日子、昔日的朋友和曾经的梦想。故作此诗。

Western Pastoral Paintings and Poetry

Similar to China's shanshui art, Western culture also has a long history of nature-themed paintings and poetry. It’s called "pastoral" or "idyllic" art Throughout history, poets have looked to paintings for inspiration.

在西方文化里，也有跟中国的山水田园诗相似的文学作品，流传甚久，被称作“田园牧歌”艺术。纵观历史，各路诗人都曾从画作中寻找过灵感。

A good example is The Starry Night (1889), a famous painting by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. Seventy years later in 1961, it inspired American poet Anne Sexton to write a poem of the same title.

油画《星夜》就是个很好的例子。它于1889年面世，出自著名的荷兰画家文森特·梵·高。在七十年之后的1961年，它给了美国诗人安妮·塞克斯顿灵感，写下了一首同名诗。

Excerpt from The Starry Night by Anne Sexton 

The town does not exist

except where one black-haired tree slips

up like a drowned woman into the hot sky.

The town is silent. The night boils with eleven stars.

Oh starry starry night! This is how

I want to die.

So take a look around at the changes of nature in your own neighborhood. How can they help you express your feelings and understand the world better? I’m sure you can write a pastoral poem, too!
